Car 3442 was at the front of the Central Electric Railfan Association's 2000 CTA charter train when it pulled into the lay-up track at Kimball Terminal; now it's at the rear. Note how close the retracted pantograph is to the platform canopy: the track actually extends about another 70 feet or so beyond the train (to the left), but if the train pulled in any more it would have gotten wedged and stuck! Car 3458 is laid-up in a long train of mixed cars south of Jarvis on September 3, 2000. The car is one half of hybrid unit 3457-3458. Car 3458 is actually a 2600-series car, originally numbered 3032, whose mate was damaged and retired. An all-new 3200-series unit, car 3457, was built as a new mate. Car 3458's paint and decals were stripped off (long before it became the new look for the 2600s) to make it visually trainline better with its plain metal 3200-series mate. (Photo by Mike Farrell)
