S-347 was one of many work motors converted from 4000-series cars (many of which are shows below), in this case car 4323. It is in the 63rd Street Yard on August 6, 1972. (Photo by Bruno Berzins, Collection of Joe Testagrose)

S-350, seen at 63rd Street on August 6, 1972, was the first of several S-350 series work motors that were equipped with snow plows. A wooden blade wouldn't stand up in service and a plain steel one could not safely clear ice off the third rail, so two-ply rubber flooring material was fastened to the blade with canvas backing to make it strong enough to move snow but flexible (and nonconductive) enough to be effective in service. Ex-4314 work motor S-353 is at Granville station -- six years before being rebuilt -- on August 7, 1974. Only one of the dual trolley poles is actually for drawing power: the second pole, over the motorman's cab, is a sleet scrapper. The scrapper and snow plow make S-353 a powerful winter-fighting unit! S-353, with its sleet-scrapper trolley pole and snow plow, is in Howard Yard on August 7, 1974, several months away from winter snow service. Line car S-606, originally a North Shore Line car, is also in the yard, on the left. (Photo by Doug Grotjahn, Collection of Joe Testagrose)

A fresh paint job can make all the difference: Work motor S-355, formally 4000-series passenger car 4315, is on the North Side Main Line at Bryn Mawr on October 21, 1968 sporting a fresh coat of work-car-yellow, making a rather striking contrast to its dirty and faded sister to the left. In December 1965, car 4316 became one of twelve 4000-series units to be converted to work service, all with snow plows. Re-christened S-356, the car is in Lower 63rd Yard on October 4, 1972. (Photo by Steve Zabel, Collection of Joe Testagrose)

S-358, formally car 4430, and another work motor are hauling ballast car S-361 at Bryn Mawr on October 21, 1968. The S-350 series work cars were commonly used to haul ballast cars where trolley poles were needed. Ballast for the North Side Line was often loaded on the South Boulevard team track. For one year, a series of belt loaders were used to load ballast at Lower Wilson Yard. (Photo by Doug Grotjahn, Collection of Joe Testagrose)
