The Chicago "L" has changed its look many times in the last one hundred years. Starting out with locomotives and trailers on the South Side Rapid Transit in 1892, electric traction, with each car able to operate under its own control, took over all lines by the end of the 19th century. By the 1950s, the cars had gone from wooden trailers with elegant interiors to steel cars with plain, utilitarian insides. From there, they changed shape and paint jobs several times, but, in general, remained greatly the same. Below are links to the picture archives, categorized by the car series or type.
